Dr. Thomas J. Tsai

Academic and Career Accomplishments

Dr. Thomas J. Tsai attended school in Ravenna from kindergarten through high school graduating with honors in 1971. In 1975, Tom graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Vanderbilt University. He then attended the University of Cincinnati Medical School, graduating in 1979 with an M.D. degree, followed by a one-year internal medicine internship at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. Tom was accepted into the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1980 for a three-year residency in Ophthalmology. He then started his fellowship in 1983 at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary specializing in Vitreo-Retinal diseases and Surgery of the Eye. Since 1985 he has been in private practice in Akron with privileges at all Akron Hospitals and Robinson Memorial Hospital. Tom has always considered medicine as a life work, even as a child. Before he became a doctor of this magnitude, people in this area would travel as far as Boston to receive treatment of this nature. He was instrumental in the development of the subspecialty of surgical and retinal medical care to the citizens of surrounding counties. Tom has just established another retinal group to expand his practice. He is actively involved with the Eye Training Program at Akron City Hospital. Dr. Tsai has written several articles and has done research in this area. He has made a positive name for himself among his peers and his patients. And for that, we can “look one in the eye” and be very proud.
