Athletic Accomplishments
A 1937 graduate of Ravenna High School, “Turk” earned his nickname because he was a strong competitor in whatever he did. Turk was an outstanding player on the undefeated varsity football team in the Fall, and then captained the Varsity Basketball and Track Teams. He served as sports editor of the award-winning Hi-Times school newspaper and participated in Hi-Y and the Thespian Club. Following graduation he was accepted at Indiana University Bloomington where he studied for two years before transferring to Findlay College. At Findlay Turk captained the track team and lettered in football and basketball. Graduation from college saw the advent of World War II. He was accepted for officers’ train- ing in the U.S. Army and served two and one-half years in the European Theater of Operations. He held the rank of Captain when he left the service and began his teaching career. While teaching at Westfield and Plymouth schools in Ohio, he earned his M.A. Degree at Kent State University. Turk served as Superintendent of Schools for the Troy, Thompson, West Geauga and Chardon Schools. Among his many career related awards and honors, and perhaps the most meaningful, is the naming of Robert C. Lindsay Elementary School in the West Geauga District. Beginning his academic and sports career in Ravenna as an all-around participator, he continued that tradition by dedicating his life to good education, not only for himself, but all those who came under his tutelage.
