Q: How can I get rid of Spyware or MalWare on my home computer?

A: If you do not have an anti-malware tool, download, update and run MalwareBytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. The tool is free and is a pretty good MalWare Scanner/remover tool. Many home users also like SpyBot available at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html.  If you can not get rid of the infections yourself, get help. A great place for help is the Experts Exchange. A good web site with experts that will help you for free is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/.

Once your computer is no longer infected, please go to the Microsoft Windows site (http://update.microsoft.com) and apply all of the critical patches that it suggests. If you find you have patches that have not been applied, please access the site a few times in a row to make sure that all patching is done and make sure your automatic updates are complete. Make sure that you have Automatic Updates turned on to run every day (you can control this in the control panel). Please also make sure that you download and run the Microsoft Malicious software remover tool (http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx) – this is normally run through the updates, but if you have patching that is not complete, you will want to be sure. This tool is NOT a replacement for a virus scanning program. If the Microsoft sites for scanning or updates will not open, there is a better than average chance that you have some kind of infection.

Q: Why won’t my home computer read some pages on this web site?

A: This web site is designed to be HTML 5  and mobile compliant. Older web browsers may not be up to the task. Please update your browser to the newest stable version. If you have an old WebTV, contact your provider for an upgrade or a replacement. We also use code that requires free readers. Make sure that you have the current version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Shockwave Player and/or Adobe Air Player installed on your computer. Some of the external sites linked to our web site may require other additional readers or plug-ins.
